Government agrees to investigate council tax debt collection
Martin Lewis has shared that the government has agreed to investigate how quickly council tax debt is escalated. At the moment, falling behind by a single payment can mean the whole year's bill becomes due at once, often followed by court costs and bailiffs. For millions of households, that escalation is catastrophic.
Why this matters to us
This is fantastic news for people living in poverty, and for the vulnerable people who so often slip through the gaps. Too many end up facing bailiffs over debts they were never in a position to pay, and every added fee pushes them further into a cycle of poverty that is incredibly hard to escape.
We hope this investigation leads to real, lasting change: fairer treatment, more time and more support for the people who need it most. Nobody should be pushed deeper into hardship because they are struggling.
